I stopped to take a picture of a window I pass often on Greenwich St., but it wasn't coming out right, and it was raining. As I was about to go, I noticed the simple angles and colors of the wall and two shades of sidewalk and went with it.

One of the nice things about all the rain we had in June was that if the storm passed through quickly enough, we were treated to these kinds of views.

They used to name PATH cars after New Jersey towns, but those are few and far between now as they add new cars.

Day 166 of 365
I've long wanted to capture on megapixels the rainbow-tinted walkway that stretches above 15th St., but I'm usually already in the car -- mine or the car service's -- heading from 9th Ave. to 10th to head home. But because I'd parked on 15th just across 10th, I had my chance early this morning.
Were I not so tired and eager to get home, maybe I could've gotten the tripod out of the trunk and set up a longer exposure or waited for a car passing to add some streaks of light, but this worked out fine for me.

Day 165 of 365
Two hundred days to go!
I parked at the corner of 15th St. and 10th Ave. tonight, so I snapped a picture of the NBC above the door at 85 10th Ave. It's not, nor was it ever, part of the National Broadcasting Company. It was an addition to the National Biscuit Company (Nabisco) at Chelsea Market.

"Play at the plate," New Jersey, July 2006
Getting that perfect shot of a play at the plate is always a goal of mine at the ballpark.

The bowling alley where I spent a few high school nights burned down last week. It was obliterated, but the owner says he'll rebuild.

Day 160 of 365
[I still haven't caught up on blogging my daily photos since coming back from vacation, but they're all in the Flickr set. I'll catch up soon enough, but I just couldn't wait until I had to post this one.]
[The backlog is released and 18 days of photos have been posted, beginning with Day 142. Start there and head back here!]
Ever since I first read about the decommissioned railroad tracks built over 10th Avenue and the West Side, I've been intrigued. And once they announced that the old trestle would become the High Line Park, I've eagerly anticipated my first trip up there.
This one particular overpass has caught my eye since 2006, when I first started working in Chelsea Market. I'm standing on the east side of 10th Avenue, just north of the Market, looking west across the avenue to where the tracks used to duck into the building before emerging out the north side and continuing up to 34th St.
Many of the old entryways have been built over, like the one in this photo, so it's only bits and pieces of the rail line's past that remain. The rest is left to the imagination.

Day 158 of 365
I was tired and lazy this Saturday and didn't try very hard. This is the one and only time I pressed the shutter, and I just let it be.
"Madison Valley rainbow," Montana, May 2006
Pick any road in Big Sky Country and turn your gaze to either side and you can't help but marvel at the roadside scenery.
I wondered what native young men thought of their Montana, what they'd thought in 1870, what the old men felt in it, and all the lovely women hidden. -- Jack Kerouac, Esquire magazine, published March 1970
"The lone lock," New Jersey, January 2009
This pole stands partially engulfed by a bush that's started to grow around it, a metal lock dangling from a loop with no corresponding pole on the other side of the small parking lot alongside the school building. I'm not sure anyone has the key anymore, even if anyone else is aware it is there.

Day 157 of 365
Chelsea Market in Manhattan is the former home to NABISCO, which baked Oreo cookies and Uneeda Biscuits in the complex. Most of the building has been made over for the retail space on the first floor and the offices above (with some historical displays on the first-floor corridor of shops and bakeries), but this is one of the few unique holdovers from its industrial past.

Day 156 of 365
As opposed to the previous day, I knew the only photos I'd taken on this day were two shots of a paused TV screen to send to the Uniwatch blog and video of Harry taking a shortcut through the newspaper recycling shelf on this end table-like piece in our foyer. But I was tired and weary on this day and didn't feel like going out and looking for something to shoot, so I went with a video still.
And I'm now instituting a freeze on cat photos for my photo-a-day project for at least 10 days. Probably two weeks.

Day 152 of 365
Windows jutting out of rooftops like this always remind me of Edward Hopper paintings, and this late-afternoon light clinched it for me. I'd already taken one photo that I thought would be this day's image, but then I turned the corner and saw this.
