I love taking pictures in the car mirror. This one came as I was waiting to pick up Casey at the train station.

Day 119 of 365
On a beautiful spring afternoon at Citi Field, I took pictures of people taking pictures of people at the old Home Run Apple.

Day 118 of 365
This little guy flew in through the two-inch opening in the window of the bathroom at work. No, I don't normally take a camera in there with me; I went back for it because of his wings.

Day 115 of 365
Now that I approach the office from the south most days, I get to stare at this scaffolding disguised as a website ad as I wait to cross 15th St. I'm usually cutting it close as far as time goes, but I had a few minutes today and saw the two men walking toward the corner, so I was ready to get the shot I wanted. I think I like it even better with the people walking toward the silhouette than the image I had in my mind of someone walking in the same direction of it.

Day 114 of 365
Finally had the weather to get back out to the ballfields in Jersey City for a little pitching and hitting and shagging flies. Definitely rusty -- a weak showing at the plate, a bit of soreness afterward. Traffic up 1&9 on the way home provided me enough of a pause to get another shot of the carpet man from the opening credits of "The Sopranos."

Day 113 of 365
"Pepsi sign, Brush, Colorado," May 2006
I take a lot of pictures of signs, but this one I particularly like. It immediately takes me back there -- a warm, sunny day in small-town northeast Colorado May, the soft clouds dotting a blue sky. The refreshing thought of a soda to quench my thirst. Remove the cars, put it in sepia, and it could be an ad from the 50s.

Day 112 of 365
Harry's easier to take a photo of because he's older and moves around less than Lenny.
I wish I'd remembered that today was day 112 -- that's the house number of the place I grew up, and I was down there today. Would've been a nice tie-in. Stupid me.

Day 111 of 365
Diane Arbus lived in the carriage house, through the small door, at 131 1/2 Charles St.
When I am traveling, hurrying hundreds of miles
in trains or by car,
I pass houses
where we once lived.

Day 109 of 365
The patio is open for al fresco dining at the Maritime Hotel -- except when it's 45 degrees at night.

Day 107 of 365
I open two windows -- one for each of them, in theory -- and yet they often seem to find themselves squeezing onto the same sill.

Day 106 of 365
I read about these star anchors in The Times and then, a week later, I notice them for the first time.

Day 103 of 365
Citi Field is beautiful, even if the result on Opening Night wasn't.

Day 102 of 365
I guess that can happen after 137,000 miles. I managed to hold it in place with a bungee cord secured through the door and drive it only once -- to get it to the dealership for repair.
"Egg Rock entering Frenchman Bay," Maine, May 2008
Egg Rock Lighthouse sits at the entrance to Frenchman Bay on Mt. Desert Island in Maine. The sign posted along the lookout in Acadia National Park describes it best:
Since 1875, Egg Rock Lighthouse, perched on the craggy island before you, has helped guide vessels safely into Frenchman Bay. Among the hardships lighthouse keepers faced was fierce weather. Storm waves periodically swept over the low-lying island, washing away out-buildings, flooding the keeper's quarters, breaking windows and tearing away railings and walkways. In June of 1895, the fog signal sounded for 105 continuous hours.
The U.S. Coast Guard automated the light in 1976. Today its red beacon and mournful fog signal continue to warn vessels away from the dangerous ledges of Egg Rock.
[I considered this egg shot, too.]

Day 101 of 365
Not the prettiest of days in Manhattan, but the cold, wet weather meant no line at Shake Shack in Madison Square Park. And then it provided this dual image.

Day 100 of 365
I had to take a shot of this after randomly pausing the TV at this scene. The reason we paused it was because a piece of glass fell out of a frame on the wall behind us, bounced off the couch, and shattered on the floor. So we had to take a break from "Scrubs" to clean it up before the cats got too interested. This was kind of our reaction to the glass committing suicide.

Day 99 of 365
Fog's rollin' in off the East River bank
Like a shroud it covers Bleecker Street
Fills the alleys where men sleep
Hides the shepherd from the sheep
Voices leaking from a sad cafe
Smiling faces try to understand
I saw a shadow touch a shadow's hand
On Bleecker Street
A poet reads his crooked rhyme
Holy, holy is his sacrament
Thirty dollars pays your rent
On Bleecker Street
I heard a church bell softly chime
In a melody sustainin'
It's a long road to Canaan
On Bleecker Street

Day 98 of 365
Just taking a few still life shots in a rudimentary "studio" setting of the vintage cans my father-in-law bequeathed to me.

Day 97 of 365
This billboard across the street from the building -- it's for Aldo -- caught my eye one early morning as I was waiting for the elevator on my way home. I had to shoot it from afar because the office space in the foreground is vacant and locked (yet they keep the lights on 24/7, annoying the hell out of me).
It actually had been unlocked shortly after the renovation was complete (I discovered one morning when I decided to check the door), but someone realized the mistake and it's been locked the couple of times I've tried it since. I wish they hadn't caught it, because I feel like I could've had a better image if I'd had more freedom in my composition of it. But as it is, I think it's decent enough.

Day 96 of 365
Chelsea Market at 5 a.m. on a Monday looks a lot different from the scene 12 hours before, when this hallway would've been jammed with people.
Sunday, April 05, 2009
Day 95 of 365
I'd seen this faded American Book Bindery Building sign before -- probably when I used to take the bus into NYC from the Edgewater apartment and we'd get caught in the rightmost lane and be forced down Dyer Ave. and onto 10th Ave. A longer-than-usual backup at the traffic light near here allowed me the chance to spot it again today, and when I had pulled up to the light beneath it, I had my chance for a picture I'd long wanted to take.

Day 94 of 365
You'd think the owner of an Autobot wouldn't have to take the train, but I saw this car parked in the station.
Friday, April 03, 2009
Day 93 of 365
Yet another new route to work from the PATH -- Washington St. Along the way, Greenwich Village becomes the Meatpacking District, and only the West Side Highway is west of it. This little cobblestoned lane leads west into the highway, the Hudson and the setting sun of late afternoon.

Day 92 of 365
I was simply shooting the shadow of the cat as he lounged on the back of the chair when he opened his mouth and yawned. I got lucky.

Day 91 of 365
The basement takes another step toward (decorated) completion with a home for the Simpsons.
(I didn't get out of the house much today.)
